This site is about the process behind photography sessions produced by hairstylists. While working as a photographer for hairstylists, I find myself mentoring my clients about how to find models, how to conceptualize what to shoot, how to prepare and style the hair so that the photograph is appealing, how to send photos to magazine editors, how to apply makeup, what to do about the clothing styling...and the list goes on.
Before picking up the camera I had spent thirteen years as a salon owner, eight years as a freelance hairstylist and makeup artist for editorial and commercial print and seven years as a sales and marketing representitive for fashion designers. As a photographer I rely on my comprehensive experience. Behind the camera I see everything - when the clothes are not laying right, when the makeup needs tweaked and when the hair is not exciting. I also know the ethics of photo shoots, how to respect model and photographer releases and how to work within budgets and yet offer proper compensation for talent and models, according to their experience and popularity.
So now, I am sharing hints and tips from my experiences and the contributed material from my network of professional and talented people within the industry. This site is a work in progress and I invite all of you who have something to share to help me build a resource for those hairstylists who are actively producing photo shoots or are planning their first photo shoot. I encourage you to read the material, contribute your thoughts! Contact me anytime.
Enjoy!
